The Xirimiters de la Marina Group

We are a dolçaina and tabal group based in Benidorm, in the heart of the Marina Baixa. Our group is born from a passion for traditional Valencian music and the desire to keep alive the unmistakable sound of these traditional instruments in the streets and squares of our region.

The dolçaina is a double-reed wind instrument with a powerful, bright sound, and the tabal is the drum that accompanies it, marking the rhythm. Together they form the most emblematic musical duo of the Valencian festivals.

We perform at patron saint festivals, Moors and Christians, street parades, processions, weddings, fairs and any celebration where traditional music takes centre stage. We cover the whole of the Marina Baixa, the Marina Alta and the rest of the País Valencià.

Come and rehearse with us

If you want to learn to play the dolçaina or the tabal, the best way is to come to our rehearsals. Every Thursday at 9:00 pm we get together to play, practise and prepare our performances.

No previous experience or musical knowledge is required. What matters most is the enthusiasm and the perseverance. Many of our current members started from scratch and now play with the group in real performances. You learn by playing, with the group, from day one.

  • Rehearsals every Thursday at 9:00 pm in l'Alfàs
  • All levels welcome, including absolute beginners
  • You learn by playing directly with the group
  • Your fellow members help and teach you
  • Progressive integration into performances

Where we perform

Our group is present at the main celebrations of the Marina Baixa and beyond. We bring traditional Valencian music wherever we are called:

  • Moors and Christians: Entrades, embassies, dianas and dawn parades in Altea, Benidorm, la Vila Joiosa, Callosa, Polop and more towns.
  • Patron saint festivals: Processions, offerings, religious and festive events at the town festivals of the region.
  • Street parades: Musical routes through the streets bringing local festivals and fairs to life.
  • Neighbourhood festivals: Musical entertainment at neighbourhood festivals, residential areas and neighbours associations.
  • Weddings, christenings and stag/hen parties: Musical accompaniment for weddings, christenings, stag parties and private events.
  • Concerts and gatherings: Festive music concerts, Federation gatherings and exchanges with other groups.

Our values

Tradition

We preserve and pass on traditional Valencian music from generation to generation, keeping a centuries-old cultural heritage alive.

Community

We are one big family. Friendship, respect and togetherness are as important as the music we play together.

Inclusion

Everyone is welcome: children, young people, adults, men, women... We do not discriminate by age, level or experience. All you need is enthusiasm.

Education

We invest in teaching the xirimita and the tabalet so the tradition lives on with new generations of musicians.

Quality

We work to deliver high-level performances, with a rich repertoire interpreted with rigour, passion and professionalism.

Roots

We are rooted in Benidorm and the Marina Baixa. Our music plays in the streets here because this is where we are from and where we want to be.

How we are organised

The group is structured into different sections that work together for every performance and for the day-to-day running of the association.

Xirimita section

The melodic heart of the group. The xirimitas carry the main melody with their bright, powerful sound recognisable from afar. We have xirimiters of different levels playing adapted pieces.

Tabalet section

The rhythm and the soul of the group. The tabaleters mark the beat with precision and energy, giving strength and character to every piece. It includes tabalet, tabal and snare drum.

Training at rehearsals

New members learn directly at the weekly rehearsals, with the help of the more experienced players. It is the best way to learn: playing with the group from day one.

Musical direction

The director coordinates the rehearsals, chooses the repertoire for each performance, works on the dynamics and tuning of the group and conducts the group live.

Board of directors

Manages the association: bookings, finances, communication, performance logistics, relations with other groups and with the Valencian Federation of Dolçainers i Tabaleters.

Logistics and support

Support team in charge of transporting instruments, the costumes, coordination with festival organisers and everything needed for each performance to go perfectly.

Come and play with us!

If you love traditional Valencian music and want to be part of a group where passion and friendship go hand in hand, we look forward to seeing you at our rehearsals every Thursday at 9:00 pm.
