If you are starting out
Start with simple pieces of 4-8 bars. Practise the scales first (C major, F major) and then tackle the easy pasodobles. Do not try to play fast from the start: the dulzaina requires control of breath and embouchure.
Circular breathing
The circular breathing technique is essential for the dulzaina. It lets you keep the sound continuous while breathing in through the nose. Practise first with a glass of water and a straw, then transfer the technique to the instrument.
Play in a group
The dulzaina is a street instrument, meant to be played in a group. Practising alone is necessary, but playing with other dolçainers and a tabalet is where you really learn. Come to our rehearsals every Thursday!
Listen and imitate
Listen to recordings of well-known groups and try to imitate their style. YouTube is a great resource for finding live performances. Pay attention to the ornamentation and variations that experienced dolçainers make.
